Heavy security measures in New York in anticipation of the leaders – Mitsotakis arrives in the US Monday afternoon

The Greek Prime Minister will have a rich program of contacts including meetings with heads of state, investors, representatives of organizations and members of the Greek and Jewish communities in the US

Newsroom September 22 07:44

Tight security measures have been put in place in Manhattan around the United Nations headquarters in anticipation of the arrival of world leaders and senior officials who will participate in the 80th High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly—among them Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

On the afternoon of Monday, September 22 (local time), Prime Minister Mitsotakis is expected to arrive in New York with a packed schedule that includes meetings with heads of state, investors, representatives of organizations, and members of the Greek and Jewish communities in the U.S., as well as discussions with leading think tanks and interviews with international media.

On Tuesday, September 23, the Prime Minister will attend a reception in New York hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump in honor of the visiting leaders.

On Wednesday, September 24, Mr. Mitsotakis will deliver two interventions at the UN on the protection of minors online, artificial intelligence, and international peace and security. His first address, on AI, will be delivered in the morning during an Australian event on “Protecting Children in the Digital Age,” while the second, at midday, will be during South Korea’s open debate—titled “Artificial Intelligence and International Peace and Security”—as part of its presidency of the Security Council for September.

That same afternoon, the Prime Minister will also deliver remarks at a community luncheon co-hosted by 28 Greek-American organizations, attended by representatives of AHEPA, HALC, PSEKA, AHI, HANC, and HACC. Distinguished members of the diaspora will be honored at the event.

On Wednesday evening, Mr. Mitsotakis will attend and briefly address the ceremony awarding Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with the Templeton Prize, following a private meeting with His All-Holiness earlier in the day.

On Friday, September 26, the Prime Minister will deliver his address before the UN General Assembly.

Key Themes of the Address

In his speech, Mr. Mitsotakis will highlight the shifting international and regional geopolitical environment, Greece’s role as a pillar of stability within it, and the challenges and risks extending from Ukraine to the Middle East.

That morning, he is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters.

Engagements with Investors

During his stay in New York, the Prime Minister will also meet with investors and representatives of major companies active in sectors including energy, defense, and pharmaceuticals.

He will present the investment prospects of the Greek economy, which is achieving primary surpluses and enabling the government to proceed with tax cuts, even amid global volatility and uncertainty.

High-Level Meetings

As part of the UNGA High-Level Week, Mr. Mitsotakis will also hold meetings with:

  • Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides (Tuesday, September 23)
  • Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev (Tuesday, September 23)
  • Yemen President Rashad al-Alimi (Tuesday, September 23)
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (Tuesday, September 23)
  • Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khalid al-Hamad al-Sabah (Thursday, September 25)
  • Transitional President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sara (Wednesday, September 24)

As every year, he will also meet with representatives of major American Jewish organizations.

In addition, he will participate in high-profile interviews with leading international media. On Wednesday, September 24, he has been invited to a Wall Street Journal discussion panel tied to UNGA (Journal House UNGA), under the theme “Is Greece Back?”, moderated by WSJ editor-in-chief Emma Tucker.

On Friday, September 26, he will give a live interview on Bloomberg TV.

Foreign Minister’s Parallel Agenda

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis arrived in New York on Sunday evening (local time). He will accompany the Prime Minister in several meetings, while also pursuing his own full agenda of contacts with foreign ministers from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Central, and Latin America.

His discussions will focus on the war in Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East, developments in sub-Saharan Africa, and broader global challenges.

Mr. Gerapetritis will also participate in trilateral meetings of the foreign ministers of Greece-Cyprus-Egypt, Greece-Cyprus-Jordan, and Greece-Cyprus-Syria, as well as in the quadrilateral cooperation framework of Greece-Romania-Bulgaria-Croatia. He will attend the Transatlantic Dinner hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

As part of the 80th UN General Assembly, he will join the High-Level Meeting marking the UN’s 80th anniversary and the International Conference on the Two-State Solution co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.
