Italy sends Navy frigate to protect flotilla heading to Gaza

The Italian Defense Minister condemned the attack – According to mission members, ships from Italy, England, and Poland were damaged – “It is a criminal act,” denounced Maria Elena Delia

Newsroom September 24 04:25

Today, the Italian Ministry of Defense ordered the Italian Navy frigate Fasan to move to the area where the Global Sumud Flotilla is located, after mission members reported that they had come under attack off the coast of Crete.

“To ensure assistance to the Italian citizens who are part of the flotilla, tonight I ordered the immediate intervention of the multi-purpose frigate Fasan of the Navy, which was sailing north of Crete as part of Operation Safe Sea,” said Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.

According to Crosetto, the frigate is already heading to the area for possible rescue operations.

The minister, according to the Italian news agency Ansa, made the decision after consulting with the Prime Minister, clarifying that “the Israeli military attaché in Italy, our ambassador and military attaché in Tel Aviv, as well as the crisis unit of the Foreign Ministry, have all been informed.”

The Italian Defense Minister did not hesitate to “strictly” condemn the attack against the flotilla, which is heading to the Gaza Strip in an attempt to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinians and to “break” the naval blockade imposed by Israel.

“Four or five vessels were damaged; they wanted to wear us down psychologically”
The organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla reported that on Tuesday night they came under drone attacks and that explosions hit ships from Italy, England, and Poland.

Specifically, they stated that “multiple drones, unknown objects, communication jamming, and explosions” caused disruption to several of the vessels participating in the mission, which are currently off the coast of Greece. “We are experiencing these psychological operations in real time, but they will not intimidate us,” the organization’s official statement said.
