Triggou and Stankoglou bring to life the legendary screen couple Karezi and Kourkoulos in the stage adaptation of Lola

Where and when the play will premiere – and the talented artists joining the cast

Newsroom November 3 10:56

The iconic Lola, the unforgettable heroine of 1960s Greek cinema brought to life by Tzeni Karezi alongside Nikos Kourkoulos, returns to the stage in a bold new theatrical adaptation.

Starting January 30, for twenty performances only, the stage of the Pallas Theatre will be transformed into the backstreets of old Troumba, where the lights will rise once more on the dark and passionate story of Lola and Aris. The production, adapted and directed by Christos Sougaris, stars Elli Triggou and Yiannis Stankoglou in the legendary lead roles.

A Classic Reborn

The original film, directed by Dinos Dimopoulos and written by Ilias Lymberopoulos, premiered in 1964 and quickly became a milestone of Greek cinema, moving audiences with its emotional depth and unforgettable performances. Upon its release in Athens and Piraeus, it sold over 313,000 tickets.

Filming was no easy feat — the Troumba district, notorious at the time, posed several dangers. Large-scale sets had to be constructed to isolate the filming area while preserving the neighborhood’s authentic atmosphere.

Equally unforgettable was the scene that marked Vicky Moscholiou’s artistic debut, as she sang from a high window the haunting song by Stavros Xarchakos, “Tou Iliou Svistiké to Fos” (“The Sun’s Light Has Faded”), symbolizing the film’s deep melancholy. The soundtrack also included timeless classics such as “Den Ehei Arhi” performed by Tzeni Karezi herself and “Oneiro Dèmeno” sung by Panos Gavallas and Ria Kourti.

The Story

Set in the seedy underworld of Troumba, Lola tells the story of a nightclub singer and her lover, Aris, who has just been released from prison. Determined to uncover who betrayed him and whether Lola played a part in his downfall, Aris returns to the dangerous world that once trapped him.

The cabaret where Lola performs belongs to Stelios (memorably portrayed in the film by Dionysis Papagiannopoulos), the gang leader responsible for Aris’s imprisonment. The couple finds an unlikely ally in an elderly prison guard, played by Pantelis Zervos, who ultimately sacrifices himself to save them — only to reveal in a moving twist that Lola is his daughter.

A Theatrical Challenge

Bringing this beloved classic to the stage for the first time, six decades later, poses both an artistic challenge and an exciting opportunity for the creative team.

Director Christos Sougaris and the cast — including Elli Triggou, Yiannis Stankoglou, and Giorgos Gallos — take on roles indelibly associated with the stars of the golden age of Greek cinema. Yet, all involved have already proven their exceptional talent in previous acclaimed productions, promising a revival worthy of the original’s legacy.
