Euthanasia for horse injured in car accident in Stratos, Agrinio – Its condition was irreversible

The horse suffered an open fracture in its left hind leg and spinal fractures

Newsroom November 25 03:44

Euthanasia was carried out on the horse that was injured in the early hours of Monday (24/11) following a traffic accident on the Agrinio–Amfilochia road near Stratos.

According to sinidisi.gr, the animal suffered for several hours due to its severe injuries on the edge of the Agrinio–Amfilochia National Road.

From the accident, the horse suffered an open fracture in its left hind leg and fractures in its spine. Earlier, a local citizen had covered the injured animal with a blanket.

Eventually, the Hellenic Equine Protection Association (ESPI), which was informed and sent a veterinarian from Arta to examine the horse, decided that its condition was irreversible, and the horse was euthanized on Monday afternoon.

Full statement from the Hellenic Equine Protection Association (ESPI):

*”Stratos, Aetolia-Acarnania — another horse injured on the roadside.
And once again, everyone is ‘irresponsible’. Region, Municipality, Forestry Office, Ministry: no one takes action, because the legislation allows Regions to disclaim all responsibility (Keletsi Law 2023).
The result? Helpless animals suffering alone.

The citizen who covered the horse with a blanket showed humanity where the authorities failed, and we thank him.

The Hellenic Equine Protection Association (ESPI) was immediately informed and sent a cooperating veterinarian at our expense to perform a clinical examination and assess the animal’s condition.

Unfortunately, the injuries were irreversible:

  • Open fracture in the left hind leg
  • Spinal fractures

The injuries were incompatible with life. To prevent prolonging its suffering, euthanasia was decided and carried out for purely humanitarian reasons.

This is not the first time. A month ago, in Thebes, a horse remained unattended for 20 hours. And how many more cases remain invisible…

This cannot be a model for management.
Volunteers and citizens should not bear the state’s responsibility every time.

All this happens because our country lacks a legal framework to protect equines.

No more disclaimers of responsibility. No more abandonment. No more animals dying alone on the roadside.

We thank everyone who informed us and cared. A big thank you to veterinarian Athina Tseliou who rushed to the scene.

If anyone wishes to contribute to veterinary expenses, they can contact us — it is no one’s obligation, but every contribution allows us to respond immediately to incidents like this.”*
