Environmental focus: A swan’s journey

The Resilience of Kastoria’s swan and the importance of wildlife conservation

Newsroom December 8 02:28

After 3.5 years of solitude, the male swan of Kastoria, who lost his mate in a tragic attack by stray dogs, has found hope and a new family in Lake Pamvotida, Ioannina. This story highlights the resilience of wildlife and the vital importance of environmental protection efforts.

The swan was relocated to Ioannina in February 2022 with the hope that a change of environment would aid his recovery. His original mate had been severely injured and later succumbed to her wounds, a loss that deeply affected the swan, who remained loyally by her side.

Finding a new mate is especially challenging for swans, which are monogamous by nature, making this renewed family bond particularly significant. The swan is now accompanied by a mate and three cygnets, symbolizing a hopeful new beginning.

Nikos Panagiotopoulos from the Environmental Protection Society and Wildlife Care Station of Kastoria shared these insights, emphasizing the crucial role of conservation and rehabilitation in preserving our natural heritage.
