Serious clashes in Chania and Heraklion with stone-throwing and tear gas between farmers and riot police – Patrol car overturned (video-photos)

Farmers have also closed bypass roads on national highways and are preparing to block ports in Thessaloniki and Volos

Newsroom December 8 02:24

Farmers are reinforcing the dozens of roadblocks set up at various points across the country daily, while protests also began today in Crete, where incidents occurred around midday on Monday.

Heraklion “Nikos Kazantzakis” Airport is closed at both entrances, with farmers arriving with tractors and other vehicles as part of the agricultural and livestock protest. At the same time, intense clashes between farmers and police are also taking place in Chania.

During the incidents in Chania, farmers overturned a police vehicle. In addition, a police van was damaged in the stone-throwing and had to be removed. Stones littered the roads, as is clearly seen in the accompanying photos.

On Senetaki Street in Heraklion, police set up a barricade, while farmers and livestock breeders declared that they would reach the airport by any means in order to block it. Farmers attempted to break through the police blockade. The police responded with tear gas, leading to clashes. The atmosphere is tense, with farmers negotiating with police, asking to be allowed access to the airport.

Agricultural vehicles are parked on the BOAK highway, making the lane from Heraklion to the airport essentially impassable.

Meanwhile, clashes are also taking place outside the airport in Chania, with farmers attempting to block it and police responding with tear gas. Farmers gathered at the Souda junction at 12:00 noon. Protesters arrived at the pre-gathering point with their vehicles and then moved toward I. Daskalogiannis Airport, which they attempted to block.

However, the police, with a van and the presence of riot police, blocked the Souda Airport road (after the Pazinos roundabout) to keep access to the airport from Kampani unobstructed. When farmers arrived at the airport, attempts were made to communicate with the police, requesting permission to conduct a peaceful three-hour blockade.

Their request was rejected by the police forces, resulting in protesters attempting to break through the cordon and the police responding with tear gas, triggering the clashes.
