Valencia shocks Olympiacos in Piraeus with late surge to claim EuroLeague victory

Spaniards overturn Olympiacos’ third-quarter lead and seal a 99–92 win at the SEF

Newsroom December 16 11:22

Olympiacos led by 13 points in the 28th minute but collapsed in the final quarter, allowing Valencia to take the win (99-92) with an impressive 50% three-point shooting.

The game started tight, with both teams exchanging early threes. Olympiacos, with Papapnikolaou starting instead of Dorsey, gained a 10-point lead early on. Valencia fought back, using strong outside shooting and offensive rebounds to take a slight lead at halftime (49-47).

In the third quarter, Olympiacos regained control, pushing the score to 59-49 with solid defense and scoring from Wocacp and Papanikolaou. However, Valencia rallied late in the quarter, trimming the gap to eight points.

The final period belonged to Valencia, who went on a 13-0 run to take the lead for good at 82-88. Despite Olympiacos’ attempts to close the gap, a big shot from Puerto sealed the win for the visitors.

Final score by quarters: 27-25, 47-49, 76-67, 92-99.

The Greek side appeared to be in control after three quarters, holding a nine-point advantage (76–67) heading into the final period. However, a dramatic loss of concentration, defensive lapses and Valencia’s shooting accuracy turned the game on its head in the closing minutes.

Game turns in the fourth quarter

Valencia gradually erased the deficit early in the final ten minutes, taking the lead at 82–83 and never looking back. Rivers was instrumental in punishing Olympiacos’ slow defensive rotations, while Puerto delivered back-to-back three-pointers that proved decisive.

Despite efforts from Dorsey and Milutinov—who scored repeatedly from the free-throw line—the hosts were unable to stop Valencia’s momentum. The Spanish side extended their lead to double digits in the final minutes, effectively sealing the game.

Olympiacos loses focus at a critical moment

Head coach Giorgos Bartzokas called timeouts in an attempt to restore order, but Olympiacos continued to struggle defensively and committed costly mistakes. With 1:21 remaining, frustration was evident as the home team failed to capitalize on key possessions.

Sasha Vezenkov reduced the margin slightly from the free-throw line late on, but Valencia calmly closed out the game, leaving Olympiacos with little time for a comeback.
