Newsroom December 22 07:54

After the conclusion of the tripartite summit of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Nikos Christodoulides made joint statements, with the Israeli Prime Minister sending a clear message to Turkey, emphasizing that “those who believe they can restore their empire, we tell them that this will not happen. We are determined to defend ourselves. And we are three democracies that promote freedom, prosperity, and security.”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of the tripartite cooperation for the security and stability not only of the three countries but also of the wider Eastern Mediterranean. However, he acknowledged that the region has entered a new geopolitical era, with increased challenges and opportunities.

Special emphasis was placed on energy and connectivity, with Mr. Mitsotakis noting that Greece, like Israel, is expected to become an LNG exporter. The 3+1 framework involving the United States was also discussed, as well as the activation of the vertical LNG corridor to Ukraine.

Assigning strategic importance to the trilateral cooperation framework, Mr. Mitsotakis expressed solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attack in Sydney, as well as with those targeted by antisemitism, emphasizing the need to combat all forms of religious hatred.

The Prime Minister stated that Greece is ready to actively contribute to the next steps toward achieving full peace in the region, while reiterating the country’s support for Lebanon’s independence. He also made reference to Syria, underlining the need to ensure peace and protect religious minorities.

During the tripartite discussions, maritime security issues were also addressed, with Greece emphasizing its role as a leading maritime power. The Prime Minister announced that joint coast guard exercises among the three countries will be conducted.

Mr. Christodoulides placed particular emphasis on cooperation related to energy issues. “We also highlighted the importance of the 3+1 framework with the participation of the United States,” for strategic cooperation and interconnection. Defense and security were also discussed within the 3+1 framework. “Our presence is not symbolic but substantive; the cooperation of the three countries is of strategic importance not only for the three countries but also for the wider region and Eastern Europe,” while the three countries aim to offer a gateway to Asia.

Mr. Christodoulides welcomed the creation of the maritime security center, which is set to be inaugurated in 2026. He also stressed the need for more action on terrorism, with the goal of regional stability.

“Our countries also cooperate in the field of defense because the enemy is real,” stated Mr. Netanyahu, calling again for the return of hostages held by Hamas.
