Roadblocks a torment for travelers: the Ionian Road blocked at Angelokastro, prolonged closures also on P.A.TH.E. bypass routes

At 7 p.m., the bypass in Nikaia was reopened – the bypass at Bralos had been closed for two hours, causing kilometer-long queues of drivers – the Evzones customs checkpoint will close again at 6 p.m.

Following the situation at Bralos, where the service road was closed from 2 p.m. for two hours, farmers also shut down the Nikaia bypass in Larissa, on the old Volos–Larissa national road near Achilleio. According to farmers’ announcements, the road will reopen at 7 p.m.

With these developments, traffic police are revising their plans, inevitably leading to even longer delays for motorists traveling on the PATHE motorway during these hours.

Earlier today, farmers in Aitoloakarnania blocked the Ionian Motorway near the Angelokastro tolls with more than 300 tractors, showing—like their counterparts at other roadblocks across the country—that they have no intention of backing down.

In recent days, traffic had been flowing through a single lane to facilitate holiday travelers. That lane was closed shortly after noon, and traffic is now being diverted to a bypass road. According to information, the closure of the Ionian Motorway will last until New Year’s Eve at 8 a.m. Tomorrow, farmers have decided to stage a motorized protest march through the city of Agrinio.

Elsewhere, traffic on both directions of the PATHE motorway will continue normally, at least until New Year’s Day, as farmers and livestock breeders at the Malgara tolls decided earlier today not to proceed with further road closures during the holiday period, in order to ease travel for holidaymakers.

In Achaia, the Patras ring road has once again been closed since Saturday afternoon. It had been reopened to facilitate Christmas holiday traffic, and vehicles are now being diverted through the city.

In Ilia, from around 8 p.m. last night, strong contingents of farmers gathered at the Pyrgos junction, blocking both the Patras–Pyrgos National Road and the Olympia Odos motorway in both directions for about two hours, as previously announced. A similar roadblock was set up in Lechaina, also on the Patras–Pyrgos road, causing significant traffic delays.

Meanwhile, the Evzones border crossing was closed to all vehicles in both directions from noon until 4 p.m., and will close again at 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., with exceptions for emergencies (such as patients with medical documentation, vehicles with small children, etc.), which will be allowed to pass without issue.

At the same time, the roadblock at the Promachonas border crossing is being reinforced today with the arrival of tractors from the municipalities of Irakleia and Sidirokastro. The farmers gathered there will decide on the next steps of their mobilizations during their general assembly.

The Exochi–Drama border crossing has remained closed to trucks for a third consecutive day, with those gathered—who meet daily at 7 p.m.—stating their intention to continue the blockade until Tuesday, when the roadblocks will open to facilitate New Year’s holiday travelers.

In Chalkidona, farmers closed the local motorway interchange from 2 p.m. for all vehicles, except urban buses and emergency vehicles, and are expected to reopen it at 5 p.m.

At the same time, the more hardline groups at the roadblocks are planning a further escalation after New Year’s, with a nationwide coordination meeting likely to take place next Saturday, January 3.
