Lavrov accuses Athens: Greece abandoned decades of Russia ties, sent arms to Ukraine, without regard for Greeks in Russia

The Russian Foreign Minister's statement on Greece, during the presentation of Moscow's diplomatic project for 2025, is presented by the Russian Embassy in Athens

Newsroom February 5 12:24

Sergey Lavrov used harsh language against Athens and its support for Ukraine in its four years of war with Russia during a presentation of Moscow’s 2025 diplomatic project the other day. The Russian embassy in Greece presents the Russian Foreign Minister’s statement on the issue in a post.

Specifically, according to the post, in response to a question, Lavrov said that with the start of the war, “Greece has interrupted its cooperation with Russia, which had been built over many decades. A whole spectrum of Russian-Greek cooperation, from politics and economics to culture and humanitarian issues, was dismantled. After almost four years, there has been no change in the approach of official Athens towards our country. We continue to hear aggressive anti-Russian statements and unfounded Russophobic accusations against us. Russia would never allow such a thing against Greece.”

The Russian minister accused Athens of sending weapons to Ukraine, saying that “it was one of the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian armed forces use every day against civilians in Donbass, in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, in Crimea, and other southern regions of our country. And all this even though a numerous Greek diaspora has been living there for centuries. It is huge, peaceful, loves its historic homeland, has always in every possible way strengthened ties and contacts, and has never contributed to negative developments or trends. But Athens did not think of them.”

In addition, he also stood by the Athens-Kiev strategic agreement signed in November on the development of maritime drones.

In detail, the Russian embassy’s post reads:

The statement of the Russian government’s statement says: “The Russian drone program has been signed by the Russian Ministry of Defence.

“The Russian Foreign Ministry’s response to the question on the Greek leadership’s statements on Russia received for the press conference of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the results of Russian diplomatic activities in 2025

Question: Prime Minister of Greece K. Mitsotakis stated, “We are in a state of war with Russia”. Is this really true?

The Russian Prime Minister has stated that we are in a state of war with Russia.

Answer: With the start of the special military operation, Greece has broken off its cooperation with Russia, which had been built up over many decades. An entire spectrum of Russian-Greek cooperation, from politics and economics to culture and humanitarian issues, was dissolved. After almost four years, there has been no change in the approach of official Athens towards our country. We continue to hear aggressive anti-Russian statements and unfounded Russophobic accusations against us. Russia would never allow such a thing against Greece.

Athens was one of the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian armed forces use daily against civilians in Donbass, in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, in Crimea, and other southern regions of our country. And all this even though a numerous Greek diaspora has been living there for centuries. It is huge, peaceful, loves its historic homeland, has always in every possible way strengthened ties and contacts, and has never contributed to negative developments or trends.

But Athens did not think of them. It did not take into account that their brothers and sisters live there, who maintain relations with Greece, have relatives there, and that Athens’ actions are causing them a colossal number of not only problems, but also direct threats to their lives and health.

Another confirmation of the above was the so-called agreements with the Nazi regime in Kiev on November 17, 2025, including the development and use of maritime unmanned vehicles. This step, like every other anti-Russian action of the “collective West” aimed at “defeating Russia on the battlefield” (in fact, waging war to the last Ukrainian), was duly assessed by our side.

In addition, Athens joined the PURL initiative for the purchase by European countries of US weapons for the Ukrainian armed forces, something Greece had previously been reluctant to do. No doubt their “senior comrades” persistently pointed out this “omission” and finally achieved their goal. Everyone knows that Kiev, disregarding Greece’s own defence capabilities, is methodically pressuring the Greek leadership to transfer to the Ukrainian Armed Forces the highly effective Russian and Soviet-made air defence systems currently in service with the Greek Armed Forces. All of the above clearly shows the neoliberal totalitarianism that reigns in the European Union.

It is characteristic that the Greek public, to put it mildly, does not share this approach. According to a poll conducted for Kathimerini newspaper in July 2025, 72% of respondents believe that Athens should maintain a neutral stance in the Ukrainian conflict.”
