Ruling SYRIZA MPs bound by ‘contract’ to relinquish seat if they resign, disagree

Every one of ruling SYRIZA party’s 149 Parliament deputies has vowed to comply, “politically and morally”, with a series fundamental “requirements” spelled out by the party, according to reports.

The authoritarian-tinged “pledge” also holds that deputies promise to resign from their seat if they leave the party.

A relevant document stipulating the above provisions has reportedly been signed by each one of the radical leftist party’s elected deputies, despite questions over such a “contract’” constitutionality

“All of the deputies elected with SYRIZA commit, political and morally, that the seat they win belongs to the party and not them,” is the phrase in the document. It is also inferred that MPs disagreeing with the party’s line are expected to resign and give up their seat.

Signing the document was a prerequisite for a candidate to vie for a seat on SYRIZA’s ballots ahead of the Jan. 25 election, and was listed under the heading “Code of Ethics”…
